Hi guys, I’ve been asked by Hart Voluntary Action to have a look at their volunteering database with a view to producing some ad-hoc reports for them. I’m new to V-Base, but am an ‘old hand’ at MS-Access. I was therefore pleasantly surprised to find such a fine Access interface was already provided to the raw data. Two questions if I may:

1) Can you tell me if MS-Access reports/queries that I write will be compatible with V-Base version 3?

2) There seems to be some confusion here as to how ‘linking’ works or should be used within the V-Base system – is this a common problem area and is there any useful pointers/references you can give me to investigate this area further?

hi don,

if you or anyone else is unsure of how any functionality in v-base works, please give our support team a call on 0845 4500 220 and they (paul or greg) will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

wrt any reports and queries written in ms access: the database we’re using for v-base 3 is not an ms access database and we are not yet in a position to say whether the data will be exposed to other applications.

good news however is that the areas of searching and reporting in v-base 3 are where you will see a lot of enhancement. it’s likely that users will be able to create any queries and reports they need using the tools we provide within v-base itself, rather than needing to use ms access :)

as we are aware that there are quite a few people using a linked ms access database, we do plan to investigate whether it will be possible to migrate any existing queries and reports, but that will come after we’ve implemented the reporting functionality itself!

best wishes,
tracey

Hi tracey,
I work with the VCS West Lindsey, and like Don I have to manipulate customised local reports by linking to an MSAccess dbase because of the limited vBase 2.5reports.
Whilst this is a practical workaround, I would much rather have the capability to format local reports and queries direct from vBase and hopefully vBase 3 will do this?

Hi Martin, sorry for the delayed reply – your comment was stuck in the spam folder! One of the development team (Baazi) is actually working on reporting right now and fingers crossed we think we’ve found a way to do exactly what you’re asking for. If there is any specific reporting you or Don (previous comment) want to be able to do, please drop me a line and we can use your feedback as test cases – Greg or Paul on the helpdesk will give you the appropriate email address.
